In a recent MappEMG workshop for the partnership “Science at the Service of Music Performance” in March 2023, participants were introduced to an innovative educational tool for piano teaching. MappEMG utilizes Electromyography (EMG) electrodes to detect the muscle activity of piano students, providing real-time feedback to students, teachers, and the audiences through the iOS application hAPPtiks. During the seminar, volunteer piano students of different ages were connected to EMG electrodes, and the haptic feedback based on EMG data produced vibrations to the teacher’s smartphone, allowing for instantaneous guidance. The seminar was hosted by Felipe Verdugo (S2M lab, professeur invité, Université de Montréal) and Ziyue Piao (IDMIL, Ph.D. student, McGill University).
