M.A. Thesis, McGill UniversityAbstract:
This thesis presents research on three-dimensional position tracking technologies used to control concatenative sound synthesis and applies the achieved research results to the design of a new immersive interface for musical expression.
The underlying concepts and characteristics of position tracking technologies are re- viewed and musical applications using these technologies are surveyed to exemplify their use. Four position tracking systems based on different technologies are empirically compared according to their performance parameters, technical specifications, and practical considerations of use.
Concatenative sound synthesis, a corpus-based synthesis technique grounded on the segmentation, analysis and concatenation of sound units, is discussed. Three implementations of this technique are compared according to the characteristics of the main components involved in the architecture of these systems.
Finally, this thesis introduces SoundCloud, an implementation that extends the inter- action possibilities of one of the concatenative synthesis systems reviewed, providing a novel visualisation application. SoundCloud allows a musician to perform with a database of sounds distributed in a three-dimensional descriptor space by exploring a performance space with her hands.
